Snowbrush~ You must have lived in a lovely area if these flowers were a part of your childhood. The flower I remember from my childhood was the only one that grew in our backyard in Reno, the heavenly Peony.
Reno? Yeah, I can see how that would be a tough place for a great many plants. I grew up in Mississippi, and now live in the Willamette Valley, and a great many plants that thrived in Mississippi do well here too, but only in the city, NEVER in the wild.
You're where--on the Coast? I should think that would be another tough place for a lot of plants.
Snowbrush~ I'm in Silverton, decades now. I've always thought it would be strange to move to the Coast because of what you mentioned...you would have to get used to few outdoor plants. I've never visited Mississippi. But I remember learning how to spell it in grammar school. :)
